Understanding the need, Knock Knock Angels, a grass roots organization dedicated to serving underprivileged and economically disadvantaged individuals and families, is providing safety and restoring dignity and hope among residents. On Oct. 1, an army of volunteers furnished and decorated a two-bedroom apartment in Fontana where a veteran, Joseph Muhammed, and his 14-year-old daughter will live safely. In collaboration with the Fontana Police Department, Ashley HomeStore and Pina Furniture, Knock Knock Angels arranged a makeover session for Muhammed and furnished the apartment with brand new beds, dresser, sofa couch, dining room table and chairs, and framed pictures, converting the relatively empty space into a cozy home. “Mr. Muhammed was homeless for two years and was taking care of his child; now he has a place to call home where his 14-year-old girl will be safe. We do this because we understand the need and how much it means for people to feel loved. It does not take a lot to make a change, all it takes is a gesture,” said Vickie Lobo, founder and director or Knock Knock Angels. While Muhammed was busy getting a complete makeover at a local barber shop, the “Angels” were busy transporting the furniture and decorating the apartment. The result was a catalog-like picture. “The FPD is there when it’s needed, we are proud to be part of this project,” said Fontana P.D. spokesperson Kevin Goltara as he helped bring the sofa inside the apartment, which is located at 8600 Summit Avenue. According to Lobo, everything started with a simple gesture a few years ago and it now the organization helps several families each year. Lobo said that she felt compelled to help two college girls as she heard them talk about the things they could not afford at the store. Lobo decided to give each girl a $20 bill with the condition that they would pay the favor forward. As a grass roots organization, Knock Knock Angels pioneered the “Holiday Miracle Makeovers,” which, for selected families experiencing financial hardships, include a decorated home, holiday meal, and gifts during Thanksgiving and Christmas. The organization is also busy during the rest of the year with donations to pre-selected families once a month. The help comes via monetary donations and sometimes home repairs, said Lobo. “Whatever the need, we identify and secure the appropriate level of assistance,” she added. She urged residents to get involved in the gift of giving so that many more families can be served. “Whatever inspires you to give, we want to be your community resource in doing so.
