I worked at AIDS Arms for less than a year

    Pros

Opportunities to lead cross-functional teams and/or projects, and to gain skills directing programs. Awesome new leadership with human rights as a top priority. Always opportunities to develop new skills, lead new projects and be highly challenged. Great coaches at the c-suite leadership level.

    Cons

Salary is very low for the caliber of people employed.

    Advice to Management

Continue to offer junior supervisors opportunities to develop leadership skills. Continue holding supervisors to the highest of standards, hold the carrot stick out there for all of us to excel, excel, excel...

I worked at AIDS Arms full-time

    Pros

The mission and vision of the agency. Deserving and diverse clientele. Many dedicated, compassionate employees. Seeks to modernize and expand. Good work-life balance due to paid time off and holidays. Decent benefits package. Nice facilities.

    Cons

So many managers, but no real power to make decisions. Everything bottlenecks at mid-level managers because while they are many they are powerless and sending things up the chain is just as inefficient; leadership team itself is too large and too dysfunctional to make decisions as cohesive unit. Policies get in the way of client care. As bulky as an agency with thousands of employees although there are only 100. Allow...

    Advice to Management

A few bad apples spoil the bunch. Spur ineffective leaders to leave, retire, etc., get leadership team functioning again, and drill down into what makes the agency great—which is not managers and SOPs, but passionate and dedicated front-line staff.

I worked at AIDS Arms full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The mission of the organization is so powerful and does so much for the community! They have a strong voice within the community, as well as seek to provide up and coming treatment modalities and a full circle clinical experience for anyone who is a patient. They also throw multiple events throughout the year to help staff come together and to have fun together. Also, their CEO is the absolute best!

    Cons

Lack of professionalism within management and staff. There were multiple times where the staff did not address major employee issues (fights, sexual harassment, discrimination, unprofessional staff behavior). Also, many of the management staff would joke around in an unprofessional way or allow their staff to say things that just are not appropriate for the workplace. Lack of a strong HR led to increased difficulty...

    Advice to Management

Strengthen your management staff, provide opportunities for professional development, increase the expectations of who you hire and ensure you are finding the absolute top talent that you can hire. Be more consistent with disciplinary procedures and adopt practices that don't leave managers trying to address difficult employees feeling like their hands are tied constantly.

I worked at AIDS Arms full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Service to the community. Caring and experienced co-workers.

    Cons

Poor compensation and revolving, expensive benefits. High turnover rate. No communication with staff and low visibility of CEO. Animosity and lack of collaboration between leadership. Lack of opportunities for growth and development to the point of blatant discouragement. Outdated equipment and processes. Extremely reactive environment as opposed to proactive.

I worked at AIDS Arms full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great staff and incredible resource to the community.

    Cons

HORRIBLE leadership. A former supervisor fired 3 different staff members, while 3 others quit during my time in that department. They kept her for 5 years. She was the common denominator and definitely somewhere on the bi-polar spectrum...which is fine if you consistently take your medication. She was never fired, only let go when the grant ended. Other than that particular team, the agency and other staff were amazing!

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff that are being mentally and emotionally harassed by supervisors...AND fix it. Don't keep a supervisor for 5 years and let multiple staff turnover/quit. It makes leadership look very sketchy, dismissive, and heartless. It also creates mistrust among community partners that witness her outbursts and communicate with her only through frontline staff.

I have been working at AIDS Arms full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They care about patients. The staff has little turn over. The staff that are hired have very little education, so getting hired is not a hard process

    Cons

Very cliquey environment, terrible management, the higher ups all hire their friends instead of the best people for the job. Employees are uneducated and make many mistakes. Management doesn't care how incompetent their employees are as long as they stay with the company. Outdated equipment. Pay is far below the going rate.

    Advice to Management

Invest in better people. Pay more attention to what is going on in the office, do not just hire people with no experience.

    Pros

Great cause. Appreciative patients. Paycheck every two weeks. That's all.

    Cons

Cons Very snobby environment, terrible management, management only hires their friends instead of the best people for the job. Staff is unbelievably unprofessional. Staff passes around patient files just to read for entertainment. Employees are uneducated and make an unbelivable amount of mistakes. Management doesn't care how incompetent their employees are as long as they stay with the company. Outdated equipment....

I worked at AIDS Arms full-time

    Pros

Reasonable compensation. Friendly staff. Vending machines in break room. View of downtown in break room.

    Cons

NO advancement within agency. One paycheck away from being a client. Excessive office gossip. Poor medical benefits. Strictly enforced unit quota. Excessive, repetitive, and outdated paperwork. Leadership turns a blind eye to illegal activity as long as it benefits the agency. Leadership is able to get away with harassment.

    Advice to Management

Do your jobs with honesty and integrity. Value your employees. Monthly all-staff meetings shouldn't be the only times your employees see you. Lead by example. Invest in better technology.
